Water Damage
Fall Basement Flooding Prevention Checklist for Michigan Homeowners
By Voda Tri-County Restoration ยท ยท 5 min read
Heavy fall rain and early freezes put Michigan basements at risk. Use this checklist to protect your sump pump, gutters, and foundation before winter.
Why fall is high-risk
Fall storms, clogged gutters from falling leaves, and saturated soil combine to push water toward your foundation. A little prep now prevents a soggy basement later.
Your checklist
Work through these before the first hard freeze:
- Clean gutters and make sure downspouts discharge at least 6 feet from the house.
- Test your sump pump by pouring a bucket of water into the pit.
- Consider a battery backup sump pump for power outages.
- Check that soil slopes away from the foundation.
- Disconnect garden hoses and shut off exterior spigots.
- Inspect window wells and add covers if needed.
If water gets in anyway
Even prepared homes flood. If it happens, extract the water quickly and dry the structure professionally to prevent mold. Voda serves Ann Arbor and surrounding counties around the clock.
